Angelina
Jolie
is an Oscar-winning actress and political
activist who has not only proven her talents
in front of the camera but also in her
worldwide humanitarian efforts. She has
raised awareness of struggling countries
through not only her adoptions, but also
through her work as a United Nations Goodwill
Ambassador and her volunteer efforts in
struggling countries around the world.
Angelina
Jolie was born Angelina Jolie Voight on
June 4, 1975 in Los Angeles California
to actor John Voight and actress Marcheline
Bertrand. Jolie's parents divorced when
she was still a baby and she spent her
childhood living with her mother and brother.
When she was old enough, Jolie began modeling
and traveled around the US and abroad
as part of her career. She finally settled
in New York to attend classes at the Lee
Strasberg Theatre Institute and New York
University. It was then that she began
acting in stage productions. She landed
her first film role in 1993 in a movie
called Cyborg 2 and then as a computer
wiz in 1995 in a film titled Hackers.
During
Hackers she met and later married Jonny
Lee Miller. The marriage did not last
long.
Jolie
continued acting and finally landed her
first major role in the TV movie George
Wallace. The role landed her a Golden
Globe award and only added to her recognition
when she was nominated for an Emmy with
her performance in Gia. Jolie was awarded
even larger and more prestigious film
roles, eventually landing a major part
in the film Girl Interrupted which won
her an Academy award in 2000. Later that
year she met and married actor Billy Bob
Thorton.
Angelina
Jolie starred in blockbuster movies including
Gone in Sixty Seconds and the Lara Croft
Tomb Raider series, exposing her explosive
talents with each one. Her personal life,
however, was not as stable and she filed
for divorce from Thorton in 2002. Having
already adopted son Maddox from Cambodia,
Jolie's priorities began to change to
family and international affairs. She
maintained a booked schedule, however,
appearing in movies like Beyond Borders,
Alexander, and working on Shark's Tale.
In
2005 She starred opposite actor Brad Pitt
in Mr. & Mrs. Smith which brought
her attention because of their on-screen
chemistry. Later Pitt divorced his wife
Jennifer Aniston and Jolie and Pitt eventually
became a public couple.
It
was during her international filming for
Tomb Raider that Jolie became interested
in helping refugees and underdeveloped
nations. She contacted the United Nations
and became increasingly active in different
countries trying not only to give time
and money to helping the poor, but also
raising awareness of their struggles.
Angelina Jolie became known for not only
covering her own costs during these humanitarian
missions, but also sharing the same living
and working conditions as the other volunteers.
She was named United Nations Goodwill
Ambassador on August 27, 2001 in Geneva.
As
a UNHCR Ambassador, Jolie has traveled
to every corner of the world to work with
refugees from all types of cultures. She
has worked not only to bring relief to
their suffering but also greater awareness
to their courage and needs. As her work
brought her to more places around the
world, she has found time to dedicate
to the refugees in the areas in hopes
of bringing them even greater recognition
and relief.
In
2007 Angelina Jolie gathered several teams
of celebrities and film crews and sent
them to various locations around the world
in order to shoot a stream of footage
in different cultures gathered during
a single period of time. The documentary,
called A Place In Time, was designed to
help people gain more insight into other
cultures and gain greater perspective
on their own through understanding. She
has worked to distribute the film not
only to major audiences, but also through
educational systems.
Jolie
has continued to donate her own money,
raise money, and raise awareness to various
international causes. She founded the
National Center for Refugee and Immigrant
Children in 2005 to provide free legal
aid to children who were seeking asylum.
She's also been very vocal about support
for Third World children around the world
who need protection and care from international
entities. Angelina Jolie is also the co-founder
of the Jolie/Pitt Foundation which donated
large sums of money to Doctors Without
Borders and Global Action for Children.
She's also a co-chair for the Education
Partnership for Children of Conflict.
Angelina
Jolie has received numerous awards for
her humanitarian work, including the Citizen
of the World Award and the Global Humanitarian
Award. The King of Cambodia awarded her
citizenship in 2005 for her work to establish
a wildlife sanctuary in the north-western
region of the country.
Jolie
has three adopted children and one biological
child with actor and partner Brad Pitt.
