Deepak
Chopra
is an Indian doctor and writer who has
written several influential books on spirituality
and mind-body medicine. His prolific teachings
in spirituality, religion, and consciousness
have influenced the New Thought Movement
as well as millions of people around the
world.
Deepak
Chopra was born in New Delhi, India on
October 22, 1946. His father, Krishna
Chopra, a cardiologist, may have played
a part in Chopra's decision to attend
the All India Institute of Medical Sciences
after which he emigrated to the U.S. with
his new wife, Rita. Upon their arrival
in 1970, Chopra began his medical internship
in New Jersey followed by a term of residency
at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts
and another at the University of Virginia
Hospital. When he completed his residency,
Chopra passed his board exams as a doctor
of internal medicine and endocrinology.
For
the next few years Chopra taught at Boston
University and Tufts University, later
becoming Chief of Staff at the New England
Memorial Hospital in Massachusetts. He
became Chief at Boston Regional Medical
Center in Boston, Massachusetts before
establishing a private practice. In 1981
Chopra met Dr. Vaidya Brihaspati Dev Triguna,
a practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine,
an ancient type of mind-body medicine
that originated in India and influences
holistic medicine around the world. After
becoming inspired by the meeting, Chopra
became actively involved in the Transcendental
Meditation movement, eventually becoming
an influential leader.
In
1993 Deepak Chopra became the Executive
Director of the Sharp Institute for Human
Potential and Mind-Body Medicine in San
Diego, California. His goal was to find
broader aims in mind-body treatment and
he continued his quest with The Chopra
Center in 1996. The Center, located in
La Jolla, was eventually moved to Carlsbad,
California in 2002 and continued with
a branch in New York.
Chopra's
goal was to combine the best of western
medicine with the traditions of natural
medicine. He believed that good health
was not jus the absence of disease, but
a function of balance within the body
and mind. The American Medical Association
has recognized the Chopra Center and certified
it for continuing education for physicians.
Deepak
Chopra is also a well-known author with
over 40 published works. He first became
internationally recognized after his first
book, Creating Health, was published in
1986. The book explained the interconnection
between the mind and body and the importance
of meditation to both prevent and help
treat medical conditions. Later books
focused on both medicine as well as connections
between religion and science. Some scientists
criticize Chopra's use of science and
quantum physics to explain healing processes
in mind-body medicine.
Chopra
contributes to internet blogs (including
the popular "The Huffington Post"
blog) and posts and helps to spread ideas
of mind-body medicine and peace through
his work. His daughter, Mallika Chopra
runs a blog to which Deepak regularly
contributes. The blog is designed to bring
awareness to voices from South Asia. His
son, Gotham Chopra, alongside Richard
Branson and Deepak, runs Virgin Comics
LLC, a company created to help spread
peace and awareness through comics and
trading cards that display traditional
Kabalistic characters and stories.
