The
Apprentice is a popular reality
television program hosted by the New York
real estate developer and businessman Donald
Trump. The Apprentice was created by the
king of reality TV Mark Burnett, who also
created several other programs from the
genre (Survivor, Rock Star, The Contender,
etc).
Episode one of the first season of the NBC
program The Apprentice aired on the 8th
of January, 2004. The show was marketed
as the "ultimate job interview"
with the winner getting a six figure paying
job for at least one year with the Trump
organization. The contestants are based
in the "ultimate jungle" of New
York in the Trump Tower, where they live
and work together.
"It's always interesting to watch
people who have been incredibly successful
in their own businesses work in a group
made up of equally strong personalities.
It takes a special kind of leader who can
effectively manage a team of veritable strangers
and find the best way to get strong, winning
performances from them."

Each week the contestants are split into
two groups and given a business related
task to complete. One person from each group
takes on the task of project manager and
is responsible for the management of their
team. The winning team is rewarded with
a special outing, which could include anything
from a night out at a restaurant through
to visiting a movie making studio. The project
manager and up to three contestants from
the losing side must face the dreaded boardroom
interrogation where Donald Trump and two
advisors discuss their performances and
fire one of them.
The boardroom appearances are the most intense
moment of The Apprentice as the contestant
are fighting to remain in the competition.
Trump and his advisors ask probing questions
that force the contestants to justify their
performances, while the contestants often
turn on each other. Loyalty is often lost
as they pass the blame onto their fellow
team mates to keep their positions.
The Apprentice has become wildly successful
and has run for more than 6 seasons. Season
6 of the Apprentice is be based in Los Angeles
where Donald Trump also has business interests.
From season 1 through to season 5 of The
Apprentice, the advisors that Donald Trump
had in his boardroom were Carolyn Kepcher
and George
Ross. They were central figures to the
program, but were replaced in season 6 with
his son Donald Trump, Jr. and his daughter
Ivanka
Trump.

There have also been several imitators with
similar premises as The Apprentice series,
including "The Rebel Billionaire"
with Richard
Branson and "The Benefactor"
with Mark
Cuban. NBC also attempted to produce
its own spin-off of the program with "The
Apprentice: Martha Stewart". It was
similar to Donald Trump's Apprentice, but
hosted by the former inmate and female billionaire
Martha Stewart. It lasted just one season
before NBC canceled it due to poor television
ratings.
The Apprentice has also been taken up by
a number of countries worldwide, with famous
business leaders from each country taking
a similar role as Donald Trump. They all
have their own version of the popular "You're
Fired!" term that Donald Trump dismisses
the contestants with. The International
versions have had varying degrees of success.
