Eckhart
Tolle
is a bestselling writer and speaker on
spirituality and mediation. His workshops,
speeches and books have inspired thousands.
His most famous works include The Power
of Now and A New Earth.
Eckhart
Tolle was born in 1948 under the name
Ulirich Tolle in Germany. He attended
primary schools until the age of 13 when
he moved to Spain to live with his father.
It was at that time that Tolle ceased
to attend formal school and, instead,
took courses on his own in order to finish
his education and prepare himself for
university. When Tolle was in his early
twenties he moved to England in order
to attend the University of England.
It
wasn't until Eckhart Tolle was in his
late twenties that he experienced a spiritual
enlightenment that changed his life. Having
struggled with severe periods of depression,
Tolle began focusing on spirituality and
changed his name (and complete identity)
to Ekhart. It's thought that the name
reflects the famed mystic Meister Eckhart
from Germany. As a result of his spiritual
rebirth, Tolle began writing and penned
the bestselling non-fiction book The Power
of Now which was dedicated to focusing
on the importance of each moment.
Tolle
continued to write and began giving speeches
and workshops associated with the idea
of transcending the material body and
ego so that each one of us can attain
a greater understanding of ourselves and
the universe. His teachings focus on removing
oneself from thoughts and egotistical
anchors and, instead, focusing on each
moment and releasing oneself from thought
in exchange for greater appreciation for
life.
Eckhart
Tolle's writings and seminars also focus
on what he calls the "pain-body"
which refers to the negative thoughts
that radiate from previous experiences
and influence our minds and bodies in
unproductive ways. Instead, Tolle teaches
that we must focus on the present and
everything that surrounds us in the now,
taking action to alleviate suffering in
ourselves in order to create a better
world for ourselves and others.
Tolle's
work is influenced by a variety of religions
and famous spiritualists including Meister
Eckhart, Advaita Venanta, mystical Islam,
Zen Buddhism, and the Bible. He gives
speeches all over the world in English,
German and Spanish. Eckhart Tolle lives
in Vancouver, Canada.
