Li
Ka Shing is the wealthiest
man in Hong Kong and East Asia. The Hong
Kong billionaire started in the plastic-toy
industry in the 50s and has moved into many
other areas of business over the years,
including telecommunications, shipping,
financial services and real estate. Forbes
business magazine estimated the wealth of
Li Ka Shing to be $13 billion US dollars
in 2005.
Li Ka Shing was born on July 29, 1928 in
the south eastern coastal city of Chiu Chow,
China. After his family fled the war, Li's
father passed away, leaving him to take
responsibility for the family at just 12
years of age. Li Ka-Shing left school to
work in a plastics factory to provide for
his family, often working 16 hour days.

Li Ka Shing's hard work paid off and he
went on to start his own plastics manufacturing
company called "Cheung Kong Industries".
The company grew rapidly, expanding into
real estate and eventually being listed
on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1972.
Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited continued
to grow through acquiring major companies
like "Hutchison Whampoa Limited"
and "Hongkong Electric Holdings Limited".
The Hong Kong entrepreneur's business holdings
span more than forty countries and have
interests in providing electricity, real
estate development, retailing, shipping
container terminals, and large investments.
The value of Li's businesses (including
Cheung Kong and Hutchison Whampoa) account
for more than 10% of the Hong Kong Stock
Exchange.
Li KaShing is the widowed father of two
sons, Richard and Victor. Both sons play
important roles in the business interests
of their father, with Victor being the Managing
Director and Deputy Chairman of "Cheung
Kong" and the Deputy Chairman of "Hutchison
Whampoa". While younger son Richard
is the Chairman of the information technology
company "PCCW", one of the leading
IT and telecommunications companies in Asia.
Being a billionaire has allowed Li to be
a generous philanthropist, setting up the
"Li
Ka Shing Foundation" in 1980 to
create "a culture of giving".
