Hay House. She's also the author of several
self-help books including the best-selling
book You Can Heal Your Life.
Hay was born in 1926 and endured a rough
childhood of abuse and poverty. As a result,
Hay ran away from home when she was in
her teens and forged a new life for herself
in New York City. She became a model and
met and married a wealthy businessman.
Settling into marriage seemed to be good
to Hay and she continued her career until
her marriage fell apart 14 years later.
her divorce, Hay began attending meetings
at the Church of Religious Science and
started training to become a minister.
Louise Hay's involvement in the church
increased over time and she began speaking
to the congregation and eventually became
a counselor for the church. These counseling
sessions gave Hay a new look at her life
and she began focusing her career on helping
began documenting her work and the associations
between physical illness and thought processes.
She also began developing processes for
changing physical problems through positive
thoughts. Hay focused on the power of
positive thinking and the resulting health
effects and compiled them into a book
called Heal Your Body.
Hay began selling her book and touring
the country giving lectures on positive
thinking and workshops on improving health
and healing through self-love. When she
was diagnosed with cancer, Hay began using
her own philosophies on herself. Faced
with the choice between surgery and drugs
and alternative cures, Hay started herself
on a program of affirmations, visualization,
and nutritional cleansing. Six months
later, Hay no longer had cancer.
1980 Hay moved to Southern California
and began working on what would become
her best-selling book, You Can Heal Your
Life. It came out in 1984 and stayed on
the New York Times bestseller list for
13 weeks. The book focused on the correlation
between mental and physical problems and
how individuals have the power to change
their lives through thought.
Hay started her own publishing company
called Hay House that focuses on publishing
self-help materials that promote better
lives through positive thoughts. Hay House
features such prominent authors as Joan
Dyer, and Deepak
Chopra. Hay also founded the Hay Foundation
and the Louise L. Hay Charitable Fund
that both support individuals in need
as well as those coping with AIDS.
