The Packer Media Empire was started with Robert Clyde Packer who owned two Sydney newspapers and started the Miss Australia beauty contest. Frank Packer inherited the media interests of R.C. Packer when he passed away in 1934. Frank formed the "Australian Consolidated Press" (ACP) company in 1936 and grew his father's media assets into a major Australian media empire.

Frank's son Kerry Packer took the reigns of the media company upon his death in 1974. It was expected that Kerry's brother Clyde Packer would take control of the company until Clyde and his father had a public falling out in 1972. Clyde sold his stake in the company to Kerry and moved to America to live a more creative and free life (becoming involved in counterculture, surf, film, and the magazine industry).

Kerry Packer was not expected to succeed with his father's company as he seemed to be more interested in fast cars and partying than he was in business. Kerry was also not very smart academically and may have suffered from dyslexia. But he proved his critics wrong and grew his father's media assets into the Publishing and Broadcasting Limited company that still exists today. Kerry Packer became the richest man in Australia with an estimated fortune of $6.5 billion (AUD) at the time of his death.

Kerry's son James Packer took control of his father's media interests upon his death 2005. James is still yet to prove himself with the Packer Empire, but he has already stamped his authority on the PBL company in the few short years that he has had control. The family company has been focusing on new media and casinos since James took control. A fifty percent stake of old media assets (that included the Channel Nine television station) was sold to a private equity firm in 2006. James is taking the company global with casino interests in Macau and the UK. The casino and media interests of the company will also be split into two companies, Crown and Consolidated Media Holdings.
