MySpace.com
is a News Corporation owned company that was purchased in July 2005 for $580
million USD. The popular social networking website was started just 2 years before
being bought by Murdoch, in July 2003. Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe founded
the site that targeted musicians and bands, allowing them to interact with fans
and share their music online. The site quickly became popular with teens and the
20-something crowd, giving them a place to meet, interact, and share information
online.
 Murdoch
had previously struggled to make much of an impact online. The lucrative advertising
opportunities that were being reported by online companies like Google and Yahoo
meant that it was only time before the media mogul sought to invest more heavily
in the industry.
Even though the Internet revenue for News Corporation
remains a small percentage of the overall profits for the company, MySpace has
been an important investment. The social networking scene has become one of the
hottest growth areas online with Nielsen NetRatings reporting that seventy million
Americans visited a networking site in the month of April, 2006.

website in the United States, putting it above the more established Internet giants
like Yahoo, Google and MSN Hotmail. An impressive 4.46% of American Internet visits
were to MySpace.com.
The popularity of the My Space web property has been helped by the ease of use,
no joining fee, and the expanding selection of tools and features for users. They
include web profiles, blogs, e-mail, music streaming, instant messaging, music
videos, photo galleries, events, groups, classified listings, college communities
and user forums.
