Christian Quotes A-Z by Author |
I can indeed hardly see how anyone ought
to wish Christianity to be true; for if
so the plain language of the text seems
to show that the men who do not believe,
and this would include my Father, Brother,
and almost all my best friends, will be
everlastingly punished. And this is a damnable
doctrine.

The God of the Old Testament is arguably
the most unpleasant character in all fiction:
jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust,
unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive,
bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic,
homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal,
filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal,
sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent
bully.

I think the important thing to learn is
that we can retain a sentimental loyalty
to the cultural and literary traditions
of, say, Judaism, Anglicanism or Islam,
and even participate in religious rituals
such as marriages and funerals, without
buying into the supernatural beliefs that
historically went along with those traditions.
We can give up belief in God while not losing
touch with a treasured heritage.

I doubt that religion can survive deep understanding.
The shallows are its natural habitat. Cranks
and fundamentalists are too often victimised
as scapegoats for religion in general. It
is only quite recently that Christianity
reinvented itself in non-fundamentalist
guise, and Islam has yet to do so.

I think that the Bible as literature should
be a compulsory part of the national curriculum..
you can't understand English literature
and culture without it. But insofar as theology
studies the nature of the divine, it will
earn the right to be taken seriously when
it provides the slightest, smallest smidgen
of a reason for believing in the existence
of the divine. Meanwhile, we should devote
as much time to studying serious theology
as we devote to studying serious fairies
and serious unicorns.

Jesus, as a philosopher is wonderful. There's
no greater role model, in my view, than
Jesus Christ. It's just a shame that most
of the people who follow him and call themselves
Christians act nothing like him.

Time Magazine has to change its name to
God Weekly. This week, Mary is on the cover
again. In the last two years, Time has put
out: "The Secrets of the Nativity",
"The God Gene", "Faith, God
and the Oval Office", "The Bible
and the Apocalypse", "Who Was
Moses?", "What Jesus Saw",
"Why Did Jesus Have to Die?",
"Jesus in 2000." If Jesus gets
any more free press, he's going to start
thinking he's Paris Hilton. Look, I understand
we have a lot of Christians in this nation,
but how about a little equal time? "Vishnu
to Ganesh: Drop Dead". And "Is
There No Pleasing Zeus?"

If you have a few hundred followers and
you let some of them molest children, they
call you a cult leader. If you have a billion,
they call you Pope.

The mistake made by all previous systems
of ethics has been the failure to recognize
that life as such is the mysterious value
with which they have to deal. All spiritual
life meets us within natural life. Reverence
for life, therefore, is applied to natural
life and spiritual life alike. In the parable
of Jesus, the shepherd saves not merely
the soul of the lost sheep but the whole
animal. The stronger the reverence for natural
life, the stronger grows also that for spiritual
life.
