Francis Bellamy
was a Christian socialist Baptist minister
born in 1855 and died in 1931. The original
pledge of allegiance was written to celebrate
Columbus Day and
the 400th anniversary of the landing of
Christopher Columbus in the USA. It was
written to promote patriotism in school
students.
The original pledge of allegiance published
in 1892 is:
I pledge allegiance to my flag and the
republic for which it stands: one nation
indivisible with liberty and justice for
all.
The pledge of allegiance was changed slightly
in 1923 where "my flag" was changed
to "the flag of the United States."
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the
United States and to the republic for which
it stands: one nation indivisible with liberty
and justice for all.
In 1924 the third change to the pledge added
the word America to the sentence.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the
United States of America, and to the republic
for which it stands; one nation indivisible
with liberty and justice for all.
The Fourth and most recent change to the
pledge of allegiance of the United States
of America added "one nation under
God" to the pledge.
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the
United States of America, and to the republic
for which it stands, one nation under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for
all
The pledge was originally spoken while doing
the "Bellamy salute" but has since
been changed to simply have your hand over
your heart while saying the pledge as the
Bellamy salute was the same as the Nazi
salute or Hitlet salute.
