Forbes Rich List - The Richest Americans in 2006 |
The
four hundred richest Americans have been
ranked by the Forbes business magazine for
2006. It is now no longer enough to be just
a multi-millionaire to appear on the list,
you now have to be a billionaire to qualify.
The group of 400 American billionaires increased
their collective wealth by an impressive
$120 billion, to have a total of $1.25 trillion
US dollars!
There's no surprises at the top of the list,
with the world's
richest man reclaiming his number one
position for yet another year. Bill Gates
increased his fortune by a couple billion
to have an estimated $53 billion this year.
After more than 30 years at Microsoft, Gates
plans to step aside from most of his responsibilities
at the software giant. He announced that
in 2008 he will be giving all his attention
to the "Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation".
The decision by Bill Gates to devote himself
to his foundation may have influenced the
decision of his friend and bridge partner
to give most of his billions
to the Gates Foundation. In June this
year Warren
Buffett said he would be donating about
85% of his wealth to five different foundations,
with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
receiving the bulk of it. Buffett remains
the second richest man in America, with
an impressive increase of $6 billion.
Third richest American is the Las Vegas
casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson. Since
taking Las Vegas Sands public just a couple
years ago, the son of a cabbie has seen
his shares rise by 125% and his total fortune
balloon to $20.5 billion. His wealth is
up $9 billion from last year and he also
had the largest gain on the rich 400 list.
The remaining top ten richest Americans
includes a list of people familiar with
being in the top ten. They were Larry Ellison
in fourth with an increase to $19.5 billion,
Paul Allen losing a couple positions and
a few billion in fifth with $16 billion,
the Walton family taking sixth, seventh
eighth, and tenth positions, while Michael
Dell is in ninth position after losing about
$2.5 billion over the past 12 months.
Technology played a major role again with
the usual list of tech billionaires like
Paul
Allen, Larry
Ellison, Jeff
Bezos, Steve
Ballmer and Pierre
Omidyar representing tech companies
like Ebay, Amazon.com, Microsoft and Oracle.
The youngest on the list were again the
Google founders Larry
Page with $14 billion and Sergey
Brin with $14.1 billion. At just 33
years of age they are the twelfth and thirteenth
richest people in the United States. Other
youngsters on the list Included Yahoo's
Jerry
Yang at age 37 in position 140, and
eBay's Pierre Omidyar at age 39 in position
32.
This was Forbes 25th year of profiling the
richest Americans and the fourth consecutive
year of increases in the combined wealth
of the 400 wealthiest Americans.
