Forbes 400 Rich List - The Richest Americans in
2007 |
The
Forbes 400 richest Americans list has been
released for 2007. The magazine has proven
that the American rich are getting richer
and that being a billionaire is no longer
enough for a place in the top four hundred
wealthiest Americans.
Positions one, two, three and four at the
top of the Forbes
400 remained the same as last year,
with Bill
Gates, Warren
Buffett, Sheldon Adelson and Larry
Ellison refusing to relinquish their
places. The fabulous four all increased
their wealth by at least $6 billion each,
with the Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon
Adelson increasing his fortune by $8 billion
in 12 months.
The most notable change of the top ten richest
Americans is the absence of the Walton family
members. Even though their wealth increased
slightly from last year, the Waltons lost
their four positions in the top ten, down
to equal 12th (for Christy Walton, Jim Walton,
and S Robson Walton with $16.3 billion),
and Alice Walton in 15th position with $16.1
billion.
Their places were filled by the Google
boys Sergey Brin and Larry
Page, casino mogul Kirk Kerkorian, and
the Koch Industries billionaires David and
Charles Koch.
This was Forbes 25th anniversary edition
of the richest 400 Americans and the fifth
consecutive year of increases in the combined
wealth of the 400 wealthiest Americans.
If you had one billion dollars last year
and was one of the Forbes 400 listings,
your net worth would have had to increase
by 300 million over the past 12 months just
to be included on the 2007 list. It now
takes an amazing $1.3 billion US dollars
to be on the exclusive list. The net worth
of the Forbes 400 richest Americans is now
a staggering $1.54 trillion, which is up
$290 billion from last year.
Forbes had to leave off 82 American billionaires
this year. Notable billionaires that didn't
appear on the 400 richest include AOL's
Steve Case, Disney's Michael Eisner, Reebok's
Paul Fireman, and Howard Schultz of Starbucks,
The billionaire with the biggest increase
was the casino
mogul Kirk Kerkorian who saw his networth
increase by $9 billion, with a B that is.
Kerkorian's interest in MGM Mirage helped
him move into the top ten with an $18 billion
dollar fortune.
The Forbes 400 is published annually. The
magazine says that their "estimates
of net worth are deliberately conservative
and should be considered 'at least' figures."
While they try their hardest to measure
the wealth of the richest Americans, by
valuing the holdings in publicly traded
and privately held companies, real estate
holdings, fine art, big yachts and mansions,
they can't always be exact with their figures.
The wealthy usually don't know their own
exact net worth, so Forbes has to round
numbers to the $100 million and super net
worths of more than $20 billion are rounded
to the nearest billion.
