Forbes Rich List - The Richest 400 Americans 2005 |
The
Forbes business magazine released its list
of the 400 wealthiest Americans
recently, with mr
Microsoft Bill Gates topping the list
at number one again. The 400 richest Americans
increased their combined value again and
surpassed the one trillion American dollars
mark, just like last
year. America's richest increased their
total value by $US125 billion, bringing
their combined total value to a staggering
$1.13 trillion USD.
While Bill Gates grew his wealth by $3 billion
in 12 months, the Oracle
of Omaha Warren Buffett dropped a billion
from last year. Micheal
Dell nudged his way closer to the top
of this list, moving up from position 9
in 2004 to the 4th richest American in 2005
with an increase of $4 billion to have an
estimated $18 billion in assets. The Walton
family remained dominant in the top
ten with 5 family members listed. John Walton
was dropped from the list after he was killed
in a plane crash, and is now replaced by
his wife Christy Walton ($15.7 billion).
Technology entrepreneurs played a large
role in the list in 2005, with Paul
Allen, Larry
Ellison, Jeff
Bezos, Steve
Ballmer and Pierre
Omidyar representing tech giants like
Ebay, Amazon.com, Microsoft and Oracle.
But the Google duo Larry
Page and Sergey
Brin made the most impressive gains.
Since the search engine Google went public
last year the value of their company has
soared to almost tech bubble heights. Last
year they shared position 43 with a mere
$4 billion, while this year they share position
16 with an impressive $11 billion each.
The 32 year olds are taking advantage of
their market position and are continually
releasing new features and acquiring companies
that fit into their mix of businesses. New
services from Google include Gmail, Google
Maps, and Google Mobile, while acquired
businesses include the fascinating Google
Earth.
The largest gainer on the list was the casino
entrepreneur from Las Vegas Sheldon Adelson
with amazing increase of $8.5 billion. While
the paupers on this year's list had a paltry
$900 million!. One almost has to be a billionaire
to be listed on the Forbes richest 400 Americans,
up from the $750 million needed to be on
the list in 2004.
This was Forbes 24th year of profiling the
richest Americans and the third consecutive
year of increases in the combined wealth
of the 400 wealthiest.
