Sunday Times Rich List - Richest People in Britain

The
head of Mittal Steel has topped the Sunday
Times Rich List of the 1000 wealthiest people
in the United Kingdom again in 2006. Lakshmi
Mittal has now been firmly placed in
the number one position for the second year
running with an estimated £14.8 billion
pounds (which is more money than any UK
person has ever owned). The Indian born
steel tycoon increased his wealth by more
than 81 million pounds over the past twelve
months.
Another foreign born UK billionaire is in
second position on the Sunday Times rich
list with £10.8 billion pounds. Roman
Abramovich was born in Russia and made
his billions from oil. At just 39 years
of age Abramovich is also the proud owner
of the high profile Chelsea football club.
His £10.8 billion looks even more
impressive when you see that his assets
in 2005 were just £7.5 billion!
This year's 18th edition of the rich list
has shown an impressive increase in wealth
throughout the United Kingdom. It now takes
at least £60 million just to make
it on the list of 1000, which is up by £10
million from the 2005 rich list.
There are now 54 billionaires listed, with
20 of them being born outside of UK. The
combined wealth of the super rich is an
amazing £300.964 billion pounds, 20
percent more than the total in 2005.
The annual Times Rich List is a conservative
estimate of the assets of the 1000 wealthiest
people in Britain, Ireland, and Scotland.
The assets of the people appearing on the
list are worked out in January each year
and published in the Sunday Times special
edition of the Times newspaper in April.
Their wealth is estimated by calculating
the identifiable assets like the value of
their shares in publicly quoted companies,
fine art, real estate, and other easily
accessible assets. Things like small stock
holdings and private bank account are not
included for privacy reasons.
