Forbes Rich List - World's Billionaires in 2006 |
With
a surge in stock market prices around the
world, there has also been a surge in billionaires
this year. While the markets in the United
States have been trying to figure out which
direction to head during the past 12 months,
the Indian SENSEX has increased by 54%,
and the Russian RTS market has increased
by an impressive 108%. The gains in these
two countries alone swelled the world billionaires
list by 17 new entrants.
For the twelfth year running the number
one position has been held by Microsoft's
Bill Gates now. Gates has an estimated $50
billion in assets, while in second position
is the American investor and businessman
Warren Buffett ($42 billion). The rest of
the top 5 billionaires are more geographically
diverse, with Carlos Slim Helu of Mexico
(30 billion), Ingvar Kamprad of Sweden (28
billion), and Lakshmi Mittal of India/United
Kingdom (23.5 billion).
In total there was a record 793 billionaires
in the world, which was an increase of 15%
or 102 new world billionaires on the Forbes
rich list. The total assets of the 793 billionaires
increased 18% from last year to an impressive
$2.6 trillion.
There was 10 new female billionaires this
year, bringing the total list of women to
78. That figure sounds impressive until
you see that only 6 of them women are self
made billionaires.
One of the new female billionaires to be
listed is also the youngest billionaire
on the list. Lebanese Hind Hariri's wealth
is estimated to be $1.4 billion at the age
of 22. Unfortunately her new found wealth
was inherited after the assassination of
her father (former Lebanese Prime Minister)
Rafik Hariri. Prince Albert von Thurn und
Taxis of Germany also made the list and
is just 8 months older than Hind Hariri.
Major cities of the world seem to either
attract billionaires to live, or make them
billionaires because they are major cities!.
New York claimed the most billionaires in
the world with forty of them calling the
city home. Moscow also seems to attract
the wealthy, with 25 billionaires. While
London is not far behind with 23 resident
billionaires.
