Person of the Year for 2006 - YOU! |
Time
magazine has come to the conclusion that You are the Person of the Year for 2006!
Not just any of you out there, but you that have contributed or played a role
in the user generated content of the World Wide Web. It's for the millions of
people that have used community websites like MySpace.com,
You Tube, Wikipedia, internet forums, and other Web 2.0 sites. For the people
that are taking the power from the few and giving it to the many by producing
their own content on the web! Lev Grossman of Time Magazine says you
are the Person of the Year for "Seizing the reins of the global media,
for founding and framing the new digital democracy, for working for nothing and
beating the pros at their own game, Time's Person of the Year for 2006 is you."
Last year the cover of the Person
of the Year issue of the Time magazine would have been graced with the super
powerful and famous (U2's Bono, Bill
Gates and Melinda
Gates). This year the cover of the Person of the Year issue has a keyboard
and a PC monitor with a mirror in it, showing you, the reflection of the person
that is changing the world and how we view it. Up until recently we have
been given our news and information from a few very powerful
media moguls and press barons, but with the new version of the Internet that
has been labeled Web 2.0, millions of people around the world are finding their
own voice. The powerful few are no longer all that matters, as the many are now
finding their own power in the new Internet revolution. "Journalists
once had the exclusive province of taking people to places they'd never been.
But now a mother in Baghdad with a videophone can let you see a roadside bombing
or a patron in a nightclub can show you a racist rant by a famous comedian."
Lev Grossman People are sharing information and news online like never
before. We can now learn about products we plan to purchase, read reviews, find
the best prices, and learn how giant corporations like Wal-Mart are treating us
and the planet. Bloggers are exposing unethical businesses and big businesses
are now changing their backward ways. Giants like McDonald's are even publishing
their own blog to
trumpet their message of corporate social responsibility in the face of criticism
online.
"This is an opportunity to build a new kind of international understanding,
not politician to politician, great man to great man, but citizen to citizen,
person to person. It's a chance for people to look at a computer screen and really,
genuinely wonder who's out there looking back at them." Lev Grossman
So, take a bow and pat yourself on the back if you have contributed content
to the web in 2006 as you are the Person of the Year.. bravo! See
